A sampling of newspaper articles from the Kansas City Star and the Kansas City Times, printed in the immediate aftermath of the fire and explosions, can be accessed from this website's news articles page. These provide a snap shot view of the first 24 to 48 hours. Many years will pass before the case is "solved".

However, J.J. Maloney's investigative articles about the Kansas City Firefighters Case provides a very comprehensive background understanding of the complexities involved in the eventual legal case. Maloney clearly articulates his investigative findings, and shows that a quest for closure in the case far outweighed any search for truth. In the end, five innocent people were deemed expendable so that a case could be put to rest.

Maloney's two-part stories, which won the Missouri Bar Association's annual "Excellence in Legal Journalism" award, are reprinted on the following pages:

Firefighters Case: Part I
Railroaded, Firefighters Case: Part II

As a follow-up to the Maloney's investigative articles, read his Analysis of the 8th Circuit Opinion in the Firefighters Case.
